Great Britain #201 - MANAGING BUSINESS RISK WHILE RE-USING OPEN SOURCE

...rely very heavily on open-source software. Including open-source software components during software development improves developer productivity, while delivering more feature content in a shorter time span. However, this reliance comes with downsides. Many open source components have an array of openly documented flaws and exploits that can easily looked up in publicly available databases such as the National Vulnerability Database. This gives bad actors a list of things to try to subvert your application or system. Some of these components were added by your team to implement anything from cryptology and communication to databases. Some of these are through transitive dependencies in application binaries and libraries that you rely on such as graphics libraries or graphics toolboxes. This problem compounds due to their probable live deployment and thus immediate potential to cause harm.
Software Bills of Materials (SBOM) are lists of components that document open-source re-use and are a great tool to firstly document and then manage the open-source risk. More and more international regulation is being drafted to mandate their use. This presentation will look into where in the process SBOMs can be used and how to quickly reduce outstanding risk.

Great Britain #205 - OUTLOOK FOR THE SEMICONDUCTOR INDUSTRY IN 2023 & BEYOND

...experienced a remarkable 26.6 percent growth in 2021, setting high expectations for the future. However, the industry's growth slowed down to a mere 3.2 percent in 2022, and now faces a daunting 22 percent decline in 2023.
This feast-to-famine scenario raises important questions: What caused such a drastic change? Can the industry maintain its impressive technology advancement, including Moore's Law? Is the trillion-dollar industry just a pipe dream?
This presentation dives deep into the root causes of these cycles and provides actionable steps to ensure the industry's long-term success.

Great Britain #213 - ENERGY HARVESTING: A KEY ENABLING TECH-NOLOGY FOR IoT

Ved Nikolaos Agianniotis

...connected electronic devices are starting to become ubiquitous across all types of industries. Moreover, various studies predict the number of Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices to rise to astronomical numbers within a few years from now. However, a challenge lies ahead: the dependency of IoT devices on batteries. Operating on batteries first and foremost means high maintenance costs due to the frequent replacement of the batter-ies, especially for applications with remote or hard-to-access locations. Moreover, even with the state-of-the-art low-power communication technologies, energy-efficient circuits, and improvements in battery design, the battery capacity is a considerable limiting factor that usually dictates how often we can measure and receive data from an IoT device or prevents the usage of more advanced features, such as remote software updates. Lastly, there are use cases today where an IoT device cannot be used, simply because there is no access to mains power or /or retrieving the device for battery replacement is not possible. The promise of using energy harvesting, the process of obtaining electrical energy from ambient energy, for IoT devices is to become a technology that can enable further adoption of IoT, by reducing the high dependency on batteries and hence mitigating the challenges that this brings.

Great Britain #213 - ONOMONDO SoftSIM - ASK MORE FROM YOUR NETWORK

Ved Henrik Aagaard

...connectivity replacing SIM cards with software.
The Onomondo SoftSIM is a software-based, GSMA-compliant, UICC SIM – supporting all of the features required for connectivity and fully compatible with 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G. SoftSIM is the world’s first agnostic connectivity solution.
Unlike eSIMs and iSIMs, there is zero extra hardware required. By embedding Onomondo SoftSIM in your hardware, Onomondo’s Global IoT SIM can be stored and executed as pure software. The benefits of SoftSIM are:

  • Reduces power consumption of idle devices, saving money and battery resources.

  • No physical SIM cards mean a reduced device Bill of Materials and SIM costs savings of up to 90%.

  • The SoftSIM application comes preloaded directly from the factory.

  • SoftSIM provides the same interface as a regular UICC SIM and is fully GSMA compliant.

  • SIM keys are tied to the device IMEI and this is enforced by the Onomondo Core Network.

  • Provision SIMs on your device on demand with no need to wait for physical SIM shipments.

  • Don’t pay for SIM activation/deactivation to avoid fees, only pay for connected SIMs.

  • SIM card production generates 18,000 tons of plastic waste annually. SoftSIM can eliminate that.

Great Britain #210 - INTRODUCING A NEW TRANSDUCTION MECHANISM, PIEZO-MEMS  uSPEAKERS

...MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) speakers has trailed behind MEMS microphones due to fundamental design related and acoustical challenges.
While MEMS microphones need to convert minuscule diaphragm displacements to generate electrical signals, the reverse - i.e. generating sound energy from electrical signals requires both motor force and far higher volume velocity of the transducer mechanism. However, recent developments have solved these challenges using a new transduction mechanism that utilizes piezoelectric materials that are fully integrated with the MEMS structure at wafer-level. The resulting structures offer unique advantages over traditional coil-based systems for a range of applications. The Piezo-based MEMS devices are inherently IP58 rated while delivering 20Hz to 20kHz bandwidth using standard semiconductor SMT packages as miniature speaker cabinets. The fast mechanical transient response of the voltage based capacitive system results in improved impulse response and consistently low phase over the entire audio bandwidth. In turn, this provides more durable and reliable speakers as well as better sound quality  for consumers. Target applications include pro-audio IEMs, Hearing Aids, and new product inventions such as VR/AR glasses. In addition, due to the uniformity of the MEMS fabrication process, arrays of Piezo MEMS Speakers can be used in free-air application such as tweeters, desktop speakers and sound bars. The presentation will cover, theory of operation, design, fabrication, packaging, reliability and testing.
